Born Newburn on Tyne, Northumberland in 1886 and lived at 48 Durham Street Newcastle Upon Tyne with his parents Robert and Rebecca 3 sisters 1 brother.

Following his marriage to Lydia Ann they had two daughters, Isabella and Anne Lumsden. His employment was that described as a dealer in the music trade

The family came to reside in 13 Coronation Street Murton Colliery.

John William enlisted on the 11th December 1915 at Seaham Harbour, being discharged from the Army on the 30th March 1916

Examined Oct 2nd 1920 and diagnosed with having ‘Phthisis Pulmonalis Exhaustion’ [Tuberculosis.] Sanatorium treatment was recommended

Corporal John William Smiles died February 5th 1921, and is buried in Murton Holy Trinity Churchyard.
